This makes my heart happy. We are all sinners, and we are not to judge others. The church should welcome all believers. The greed and hatefulness of people is what concerns me in the United States.
Huge news. Thank you for letting us know. I am not Catholic but appreciate your coverage of our new pope Leo. I am grateful that the Church is becoming more inclusive — as I wish 🇺🇸 were. Have a nice day.
The truth is that outreach to and pastoral care for homosexuals did not begin with Pope Francis. In 1986, during the papacy of John Paul II, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (led by Cardinal Ratzinger) released the letter on The Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons. In 1997 the USCCB released the document Always Our Children. In 2006 they released updated guidelines call Ministry to Persons with a Homosexual Orientation. Francis did not become Pope until 2013. Pope Leo has clearly stated that the family is based on the “stable union between a man and a woman.”
With all due respect, this is a big nothingburger. We know very little of Leo’s perspectives on LGBTQ people. He’s never used the word “LGBTQ” or “gay” as pope. We have Fiducia supplicans and an invite to the Vatican for the Jubilee Year, but both of these are the initiatives of his predecessor. Even if Leo wanted to roll these back (which he still may do), it would be very bad form to do so right away. Time will tell how affirming and hospitable to LGBTQ folks Leo is, but right now we’re running on fumes. Someone needs to gas up and, Jesus, take the wheel.
