I wonder what Trump and his administration think of the comments by Pope Leo, Cardinal Cupich and the bishops. Homan made nasty comments but I haven’t heard anything about the others.

I am a Chicago Catholic and happy about what Pope Leo and Cardinal Cupich are saying. For too long, the Church only cared about abortion.

As an American Protest clergyman and Church historian I stand firmly with Pope Leo and Cardinal Cupich and unalterably in opposition to The wicked, insane, illegal, immoral, unchristian, and unconstitutional actions of Trump and his coven of thugs and enablers.

Those who falsely claim to be Catholics deserve to be excommunicated -- as if they'd really care. And Christians and all persons of good will should rise up as one to condemn and resist this evil Trumpist regime.

Mr. Wait:

If we look at the full penalties of excommunication, the way it was practiced in the Medieval era and early Renaissance, I think those "false Catholics" like JD Vance and Tom Homan, plus a couple of the Supremes, might well care. Not only would their immortal souls be condemned to the fires of Hell, but while they lived, not a single soul could speak to them, give them shelter or food or help of any kind, or even acknowledge them in any way. They would therefore live utterly alone and cast off, knowing what would happen to them when they died. Even the most depraved would find that intolerable.

Of course, the Christian Nationalists, themselves as depraved a bunch as we've seen in quite some time, would be more than happy to assist their "fallen brethren."

Well. they could always repent, reform, and be forgiven and reinstated -- if they really cared.

Cardinal Cupich delivered this statement at Loyola University on Saturday March 7, 2026 as part of his opening remarks and prayer at the International Encounter for Peace and Reconciliation Conference hosted by Loyola's Building Bridges Initiative. I was present for this event, and these remarks were very well received.

“he indicted the Trump administration’s entire moral framework. Not a single policy. Not a stray tweet. The whole thing. “

Which is exactly as he should have done.

As a nondenominational Christian, not for the first time I wonder why more supposedly-evangelical pastors don't speak out against this wicked regime instead of being its cheerleaders or implying approval with their silence every time it defies the Gospel. I thank God for Pope Leo and the Cardinals and any others who are speaking up.

Yes.

Trump, and whoever writes these things for him, are putting out Third Reich manure.

“And they were posted, as Cupich made clear, by an administration that treats the machinery of death like content — like engagement bait — like a game.”

Because to this regime, it is a game.

Because to them, bloodshed is a game. Hurt, torture, and murder — like those of Renee and of Alex — are games.

Because they do not pay consequences.

Because precious human pain and the tears coming from it, is a game.

And they pay no consequences.

Thank you for the article. It seems, this President wants to Cuba , next ? We as a nation are in a terrible position of constant chaotic state! The polls say people including MAGA are against any kind of war. I always thought, President Trump was an isolating anyone from. I feel this war will be dragged out as long as Iraq and Afghanistan war. The loser will be the American people who want the USA to be part and protect us from war. Thank you cardinal your words ring so true. The government is not for playing a horrendous game it’s for governing and helping the American people, like economic prosperity. It’s not a time for democracy and democratic politics to take money for themselves especially in this country. It’s time for this country to seriously change. It’s a time for the American people not to cede power to those who already have it and stake their own interests upon it. It’s a time to stand up and and say enough is enough, as quoted by Mr. Parnas who has fought very hard to redeem himself for what he has done unjustly. It’s time to stop the rot we have as Congress or the Senate and send a message your no longer welcome to your party or have a seat at the table to make decisions for the American people and this current government. I will pray for this country and the cardinals and bishops and Pope Leo., whose wise leadership will continue through out the coming years and elections.

“that the moral authority of the United States cannot survive leaders who treat the deaths of children and soldiers as engagement metrics.”

At the moment, the United States has no moral authority.

It has lost that.
