Shame on Dolan and Barron!

Such a sad response. I truly enjoyed Bp Barron’s work until his lovefest with Trump. So disappointing. And Archbishop Dolan….I don’t have any thing to say. Just a BIG disappointment.

It's a scandal when a well known bishop acts out of ego and prestige. It's pathetic. He should be ashamed.

I've been a fan of Fr. Mike Schmitz since I ran across his weekly YouTube videos years ago. I've been listening to both his podcasts, the Bible in a Year and the Catechism in a Year since he began airing them. I was also a supporter of Bishop Barron and his Word on Fire ministry until I discovered his support for Peter Thiel, JD Vance, and the current administration in Washington D.C. While I have withdrawn my support for anything attached to Bishop Barron and his ministry I'm happy to know I can continue to learn from Fr. Mike. Thank you, Christopher Hale, for speaking truth to power, something sorely needed in this day and age.

So what’s new. Wannabe men who use a religion, any religion, for self aggrandizement. A story as old as time.

Both Barron & Dolan chose their media profiles & future appearances on Fox over backing their church/faith & Pope Leo. Dolan has a very big ego and likely thinks he's in pole position to become pope of a secessionist US Catholic Church should Leonard Leo, Kevin Roberts, JD Vance, multiple SCOTUS, and other far right "traditionalists" have their ultimate dream come true--no need for 30 pieces of silver to change hands.

I want Pope Leo to be “weak on crime” meaning against war and crimes against humanity. I also want a President that is “weak on crime” meaning not committing crimes nor compensating J6 criminals $1.8B for theirs. This day of prayer was more of a display of the Seven Deadly Sins. Personally, I think Christian Nationalism is akin to pride, which we all know is the root of all other sins.

Trump has used the Seven Deadly Sins as his guide to life. He will have to answer for that. His niece Mary notes Donald’s true faith is nihilism.

Excommunication,please!

This is evil and unworthy of the cloth.

I'm glad Fr. Schmitz pulled out of this event, but even he doesn't go far enough to address certain Christian bigotries and ignorance. But maybe that comes with his territory. Diocesan priests have to tow the line a bit with mainline dogma. Ordered priests (such as ones belonging to Jesuits, Franciscans, Paulists, Benedictines, and maybe some others) have a bit more freedom to diverge from dogma in ways that relate to their order and its specialities. But I do like that Fr. Schmitz is still working at a public state school in the midwest, not far from where he grew up. I did also hear there were some speakers here who were antisemitic speaking alongside Jewish preachers. Sounds like a messy uncomfortable place to be.

I wouldn’t call it mainline dogma simply because mainline Protestant denominations have been sidelined, this is white Christian Nationalism, and we Catholics are as universal as our faith. We have many different people all over the world who share our faith, while the white Christian Nationalists are homogeneous. I thank God for our differences and the gifts they bring.

Bishop Barron continues to disappoint. When the revised Liturgy of the Hours comes out, I had been planning to get the very nice Word on Fire edition. At this point, I think I'll end up going with Ascension, even if it costs more. I suppose Bp. Barron might observe that Jesus ate with sinners and tax collectors. Trying to be charitable towards him as that's his due.

I am very happy to hear that Fr. Mike Schmitz backed out!!! Good riddance to Dolan. He and Barron make me sick.

Where is Pope Leo on these two disappointments? They should be defrocked and then allowed to speak about anything they wish. It is a sham for them to say they represent the Catholic church. God is watching all! Beware of his wrath.

Kathy Hughes's avatar

I would be happy with Pope Leo hosting a come to Jesus meeting for them. Both Barron and Dolan evidently need a reminder of what the faith is about.

Shame! Shame! Disappointment would be , for me, a serious understatement. Shame!

I just cannot support them anymore.

Not to be “that Lutheran guy,” but I would be remiss in who I am if I didn’t say that most Lutherans didn’t regard Eric Metaxas’ biography of Martin Luther very highly. His biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer was also pretty ridiculous, too. (The man is a hack. Not even a bad theologian, just a hack.)

Kathy Hughes's avatar

That is what I understand. Bonhoeffer scholars were evidently unimpressed with it as Metaxas doesn’t seem to have consulted any original sources. Bonhoeffer’s own relatives in Germany (his nieces, nephews and their children) were also unimpressed and Metaxas got into an argument with them and evidently called them supporters of Hamas, which is categorically untrue. Germans don’t do the performative evangelicalism that is found in the U.S.

I found both Dolans and Barton’s remarks to be out of synch with house speaker Johnson’s remarks and the other speakers of the day I heard. I did not hear from these Catholic leaders, although I do not agree with their conservative politics, the Christian nationalism I heard from the others. Perhaps they thought they would be showing them another way. If that is what they were doing, they were wrong. These people cannot be appeased. If they are actually Christian’s nationalists, they should be excommunicated with the SSPX leaders.

I was not impressed with Barron’s praise for Charlie Kirk. Kirk repackaged stale racism and sexism, and his religiosity was white Christian Nationalist window dressing. I was truly appalled at his murder, for no one deserves that, but let’s not nominate him for sainthood.
