Seventeen days after lung surgery, the pope asked AI researchers at the Vatican to ban killer robots and reject AI personhood. Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen have spent a year trying to shout him down.
Thank you for the newsletter, Chris. Pope Leo is correct. I will continue to pray for Pope Leo ‘s recovery and when we vote tomorrow all day it will be busy day for everyone in America. I will pray for a positive outcome for everyone in America.
I'm an atheist (small a, and not "antitheist"), and a person of goodwill who stands with Leo for human dignity on this topic.
At this time, the only people making money from the generative AI "boom" are the companies who are building the physical data centers. The Metas, Alphabets, Microsofts, Anthropics, Open AIs and whatever Elon is calling Grok these days (to name a few), are all surviving on investors' money and promises. GPU manufacturers like NVIDIA (partially owned by the U.S. government) are supplying hardware to them on a Wimpy Promise (from Popeye): "I would like to order one million GPUs, for which I will gladly pay you next Thursday." The current commercial customers for generative AI are not using it nearly enough to support the expense of building and maintaining the data centers that support it, and the data center owners are discounting prices to them to generate more interest. All of the generative AI creators are touting increases in revenue, but downplaying their astronomical revolving expenses.
Yes, it looks like a Ponzi Scheme, which, for all I know, may now be legal in the United States of America. After all, Jared Kushner's father, a convicted Ponzi Scheme perpetrator, was pardoned by Donald Trump and honored with an ambassadorship to France. In fact, it's sometimes difficult to determine if something is a Ponzi scheme until someone misses a payment, like the mortgage derivatives in 2008 that slipped by federal regulators completely.
But two new scenarios that should alarm everyone are attempts to cajole we, the people into relying on AI. I only use a few public search engines, but each of them is now defaulting to some level of AI when I type in a search term or question. (Yes, I said "type;" I don't converse with machines.) I suspect that this "soft encouragement" is occurring in other public search engines, as well. The other scenario is the establishment of the federal government's AI-powered chatbot at America.gov. Once the federal government (or any government) has all public service departments' citizen interfaces managed by AI, those who run the government can program it to provide any answers they want, as we saw from September's initial rollout. See also "Ministry of Truth," from George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, written before it became so easy for those in power to implement.
You say that Pope Leo was elected to fight MAGA, and I also think he was elected to fight Silicon Valley (and as a mathematician he knows the computer programmers very well indeed)
Pope Leo is a true man of God.

Oh yes, she was sexually molested for about 9 years by Donald J. Trump;
All girls and women who were raped by Donald J. Trump need to come forward and report this pedophile to your police.
