I do not pretend to be able to see what is in someone else's heart. But if someone who identifies as Catholic is more aligned with MAGA than with the Pope: it sure sounds like what they told us in Sunday school, about being careful to not worship idols rather than God.

I wholeheartedly agree with you! When did being a religion mean choosing a side and politics? I’ve been a lifelong Lutheran and never once has politics been discussed in our church. even from when I was a child and my parents took me to a Lutheran Church, I never heard them speak about politics! Ever!

I don’t remember it happening until DJT.

Completely agree! I am a Methodist and Never discussed politics in Church. What a horrible little person to say that SNAP is a Ponzi Scheme! There is nothing Christian about mocking low wage workers!🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

It did not start happening until Donald Trump became president! And we won’t ever all get along again until he leaves the office!

If we’re able to have another president he/she needs to be a very kind, compassionate person.

I challenge any Catholic who regularly attends mass, and is a MAGAT to put their faith into action, and volunteer to work at a foodbank once every couple of weeks ( JD Vance the convert, I'm looking at you). They will soon see that the people using them are often working many at more than one job-but they still can't stretch their food budget to feed hungry kids. Because kids still need to eat, whether you approve of their parents choices, or not. That is the Compassionate Catholicism I was brought up with.

You can say the same thing about democrat progessive Catholics....now you actually have to go out and help the poor yourselves instead of relying on the goverment to do so and making companies that profit off food stamps more obscenly wealthy.

Now the thing about almsgiving is "to not let your right hand know what your left is doing" so I wont go down the path of saying one side is more action oriented than the other (though I have strong suspicions on the matter).

I will say though that for anyone that does complain about wealth inequality AND does nothing about in their own personal life - this is the time to actually implement Catholic action. Be like Dorothy Day.

For you progessive Catholics that complain about the other side doing too much "judging", why dont you for once stop being hypocrites and see that the "plank in your own eye" story applies to you as well.

Why doesn’t the church deal with people that preach this kind of hate like they do with divorced people or the LGBTQ community? I’ve not seen reports of these hateful humans being denied sacraments.

Expand full comment
Nancy Stone's avatar

I have never heard negative comments about divorced people at my church or LGBTQ. I am Catholic and I am divorced. I go to mass 2-3 days a week. No one is to be denied the Eucharistic. Pope Francis specifically stated he never denied anyone communion. I just looked at your profile and you said you’re a witch. No wonder you’re so negative about the Catholic Church.

That would be a Witch with an academic background in Religious Studies and years of studying early church history and reformation theology. The official canon law of the Roman Catholic Church is quite clear on the official positions of the Church re divorced individuals and the LGBTQ community. No where in my comment did I attack the Church, I simply posed a rather straightforward rhetorical question regarding the official canonical positions of the Church. As for me being a Witch, you are certainly free to criticize someone else’s path but doesn’t that support the very thesis that I put forward? In any case, be well and I wish you the best.

Now this is gospel with teeth. The contrast couldn’t be clearer. One side quoting Jesus to justify cruelty, the other living His words with soup and open hands. You can tell who knows the Sermon on the Mount by the way they feed the crowd instead of blaming it.

Blessed be the ones who still believe love is public policy.

Christopher, this piece absolutely nails it! That contrast between Walsh's sneering contempt and Archbishop Lori's 'the Church stands ready to help' - that's the difference between performative cruelty and Gospel action. The hypocrisy of calling yourself pro-life while mocking hungry families is staggering. Keep holding these folks accountable and showing what real Catholic witness looks like. This kind of journalism matters!

What’s needed is for the government to adhere to the LAW that Trump endorsed in his first term to protect SNAP from being cutoff during a govt shutdown. A coalition of blue states are suing the feds over this as I write. The law is there. The absurd cruelty of the current govt is playing out before us. Many, many, many people are mobilizing food collections in case the lawsuit fails. Again, the poor are being victimized, quite dramatically as the value of billionaire stocks soars. This is definitely a moment when must band together with physical resources and firm, faith-based prayers.
