In reading the comments on the pope and his message, it is clear some people calling themselves Christian have no idea who Christ is. The gospels tell you. People searching the Old Testament or Paul's letters are looking for a different message to follow than Jesus'.
The "catholics" that say they can hardly be catholics after Pope Leo spoke about the poor, that they are there because of the failure of our lack of empathy and understanding, were never Catholic to begin with!!
These fools who have nasty comments against any Pope will have to answer to God. The Pope does not follow the popular opinion from those who feel that Religion is a Democracy. Religion is a Spiritual feeling, giving only what you need as a connection with God and yourself. Nobody cares what you have to say about what you know or do not know about the Catholic Religion and its Commandments. It is for each individual to make their connection with God. Not to criticize the leader of millions of true believers. People, just pray that God judges you less harshly than you have done to this Sainted man who has devoted his entire life to following Jesus's footsteps. You should spend the rest of your lives praying that God forgives you for your snipes against this Sainted servant of the good Lord. Besides which, if you are not a Catholic you should have nothing to say of what you know nothing of regarding us who believe.
“God shows a preference for the poor: the Lord's words of hope and liberation are addressed first of all to them. Therefore, even in their poverty or weakness, no one should feel abandoned. And if the Church wants to be Christ's Church, it must be
a Church in which the poor have a privileged place.”
“Instead, certain right-wing influencers erupted in fury, as if caring for the downtrodden were some radical new heresy.”
The holy father has stated for us the gospel imperative: “And if the Church wants to be Christ's Church, it must be a Church in which the poor have a privileged place.”
This is the Gospel imperative, and I do not really see how there can be any meaningful, or reasonable, contradiction — especially for those willing to take the time to read, and study, the Gospels.
Parable of the banquet comes to mind. Lol🙄...there is nothing more America First than caring for our poor and marginalized. They are an incredible second chance engine that can make America truly exceptional and prosperous.
I wonder if it's best possible to serve the American poor when there is unrestricted access to the country. I'm not saying this is what Pope Leo wants - there is a wall around the Vatican. But it seems much of the American left is in favor of the country burning out of this fake abstract virtue of "caring for the outsider"
Ben one thing you will notice if you read any comment I have ever made I never name call or disparage the other person. I stick to ideas. When it comes to how people should be treated I get my ideas from the book of Matthew and the US Constitution.
If you are trying to imply that I shouldnt be name calling or disparaging of a person then I can ammend my initial remark to "the IDEA that how we treat people is not up for discussion is a pretty ridiculous idea"
One of the cardinal virtues is prudence because context matters and blanket statements such as "care for the immigrant" need to be weighed up with other considerations. The fact of the matter is there is a migrant related crime problem in both the US and Europe. It is unjust to the citizens of these various nations to turn a blind eye to these problems because you want to be an idealogue about your liberal viewpoints.
I never hear any nuanced discussion from left wingers. Its always "right wingers bad and racist and xenophobic" Maybe these people actually just care about their safety?
I understand the inclination to jump to the conclusion that the person you do not know and has an idea you disagree with belongs to the opposite party you do. However, the truth is seldom easy to discern. I do not and never have belonged to a political party. I've always prided myself on the fact I have never voted a straight party ticket. Neither party has a monopoly on good ideas.
I do not see how we treat people as a ridiculous idea. If you believe starving people to win a war is okay. We will disagree. If you believe Alligator Alcatraz is acceptable once again there will be no agreement. How something is done reflects back on the humanity of the person doing and approving it.
You have stated that "the fact of the mater is there is a migrant related crime problem in both the US and Europe." That is not a fact, and I would refer you to a US Government study that concludes that the Undocumented Immigrant Offending Rate (is) Lower Than U.S.-Born Citizen Rate. https://docs.house.gov/meetings/JU/JU01/20250122/117827/HHRG-119-JU01-20250122-SD004.pdf
No one in this thread has name called right wingers as bad, racist or xenophobic, and everyone cares about their safety, but let's address crime without unproven and unnecessary finger-pointing.
I read Pope Leo's Apostolic Exhortation Dilexi te. Beautiful document that I agree with wholeheartedly! Love the messages the Pope is sending out to the world!
I think the same thing is going on in the evangelical community. In Tim Alberta’s “The Kingdom, the Power, 💪 and the Glory,” the author tells the story of a pastor who preached on turning the other cheek. At the end of the worship service, he was besieged by young men who tell him that it’s “weak” and “doesn’t work anymore.” He shows them that his sermon text is literally the words of Jesus (in translation, of course) and shows them that he was using a red-letter version of the New Testament. They don’t care. It’s not what they want to hear.
The rank hypocrisy of the MAGA crew with its very selective reading of whatever translation they are relying on is so stunning in its audacity as to lead one to conclude they have never in fact read the Gospels.
Pope Leo is a real undershepherd. He is in the pastures and hills caring for God's sheep. He carries with him the distinctive scent of the sheep. I, too, want that essence and presence.
Again I ask " what makes these people believe they are Catholic" ? Who exactly do they worship ? If they are not following Jesus, they are not "Christians", are they !
I recently published a book on Catholic Social Teaching, entitled CHOICES and available on Amazon. It confirms what Pope Leo is repeatedly saying about the poor and our responsibility to them.
Again, I blame education. Insteadvof teaching compassion and empathy like we learned when watching documentaries of the 1940s holocausr, today's students learn commercialism and hedonism. Time to revamp education in the US.

You are so right. There is nothing in the Catholic teachings or doctrine that supports their position.
Jesus Christ loves us all but supports the materially and spiritually "poor" people to get past these obstacles.
I am truly baffled that these people consider themselves Catholic at all.

I was brought up Catholic and have never heard such meanness talked about the poor. I guess they are teaching different morals these days. Sad.

The church believes a country has a right to protect its borders. How it is done is up for discussion. How we treat people is not.
How we treat people must be discussed!
Do you get all your political thought from tumbler and think "this sounds pretty I will say this"

The wall around the Vatican is open. It’s not closed at all. St Peter’s Square is open.
