This is the most important Substack this week. Amid all the news noise comes forth humility! “The Lord hears the cry of the poor. Blessed be the Lord!”

You see, Christianity was the first religion to offer divine salvation to EverymanEverywhere based on “By faith alone, thou art saved.” Other faiths of the day were rich-only. How Very Displeased were the wealthy about That idea!

These Heavenly words of Pope Leo are what I already knew and have said, and to read them from him made my heart ❤️ rejoice:

"Do not distinguish between those who assist and those who are assisted… Each one is a gift to the other. We are the Lord’s Church, a Church of the poor… Let us tear down the walls.”

We are a precious gift to each other, the one who is in need and the one who can provide for that need! We help each other to grow and survive, with real genuine Love and thankful hearts for needs filled and opportunities to share what we have 💞. This should be the Spirit we embrace together, as a community of those who Love God.😇🕊️💖

People misread the Letters of Paul and other letters as though they are Gospel narratives, not temporal instructions to a certain Church with a particular need for that message.

Christ’s message is universal. The Letters can be universal and authoritative, but need discernment.

The letters evangelize; the Gospel lives.

Beautifully done-- by Pope Leo and you!!

You are right.....this is not ONLY optics, but these optics are critical!

Someone-maybe you, Christopher- remarked that Robert Prevost seems to enjoy being Pope-- and for all the right reasons!!! He is using his platform as Leo XIV for global good!

Part of the problem today is that government has often put obstacles in front of charitable organizations instead of letting them do their work. The Little Sisters of the Poor have always done so much to help the neediest. Sadly, they've been under relentless attack from some politicians who don't respect the rights of Catholics to live their faith.

My mom chose to live at Little Sisters of Poor when she was 91. She lived to 102 and was very well taken care of and went to mass and prayers daily.

The government does not stand in the way of individual Christians (and groups thereof) loving the poor in our midst.

Sadly it does at times. When I lived in Washington DC the city was often taking action to delay or stop private charities from starting or continuing soup kitchens, daycare centers, low-income housing and more because some activists (who often loved to call themselves progressive and open-minded) were complaining. Usually the charities would prevail but at a cost.

But did they stop you (or me) from acting on behalf of the poor?

In any capacity? No, of course not, no one is saying so. But they delayed the opening of a shelter that was a few blocks from my house, temporarily making it impossible to do volunteer work there as I did when it opened. Are you saying that you're fine with government delaying or blocking private organizations from helping people in need because individual volunteers can just go somewhere else, perhaps many miles away?

No it's not right what the government did. However, Those of us on the right side of the aisle like to blame the government as an all purpose excuse, myself included. "But what about the government!"

Well stated this:

“Yet Leo… knows what the comfortable Church forgets: these guests didn’t need to change for him. The world needed to change for them.”

And work we must to change a world so warped by the insatiable craving for wealth that some would so readily blame and discard those who work hard for so little.
