“The fact that some dismiss or ridicule charitable works, as if they were an obsession on the part of a few and not the burning heart of the Church's mission, convinces me of the need to go back and re-read the Gospel, lest we risk replacing it with the
wisdom of this world…I often wonder, even though the teaching of Sacred Scripture is so clear about the poor, why many people continue to think that they can safely
disregard the poor.
Either we regain our moral and spiritual dignity or we fall into a cesspool…a Church that sets no limits to love, that knows no enemies to fight but only men and women to love, is the Church that the world needs today.
I have loved you.”
These are the words of the Gospel, plain and simple.
Thank you,Leo,for this.So many of us are already teetering on the brink of poverty,as some people work multiple jobs just to stay afloat.
In a country with a handful of billionaires, who have wealth to defy description, there shouldn't be anyone poor. This is why the morbidly wealthy should share their wealth in heavy taxes, and also to finance projects and inventions that help everyone, not to just make themselves more wealthy.
People who have been given a basic monthly income, with no strings attached, overwhelmingly used it to improve themselves, with a place to live in,better food and clothing, and to access benefits like healthcare for themselves. Most people don't want a fix, they just want better than sleeping on the ground in the woods or an alley, eating out of dumpsters, and no way to have anything permanent for themselves.
No one wants to be poor,or homeless,or to do without. Our society of giving everything to the rich whilst robbing the poor,is shameful and directly goes against God saying to take care of the poor, the widow and orphan, and the alien and the stranger,or what is also called"The least of these".We should love our neighbors, and even give to them out of whatever little we have so everyone has a little and nobody does without. We can all do even that little bit in some kind of way.
As a foster and adoptive mother of children teens born to mothers addicted to drugs and absent absent or also drug addicted fathers, I think the “poorest of the poor” also includes these children of addiction. We need to be “pro-life”, not just “pro-birth.” I believe we are called to create and support a society that helps every person have access to
Pope Leo is reminding all people what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. I have never understood how someone could support the cruelty of Trump and still proudly proclaim to be a Christian. But I pray daily that eyes and ears will be opened to the truth. Americans need to reread the Gospels. 🙏
At my Bible study this morning we had a reading about lepers. One woman asked who are the lepers today. We said it’s the poor and immigrants. Pope Leo is telling us we must walk away from our materialistic society and focus on the poor and immigrants. We should pressure our leaders to change the healthcare system and immigration system. We should pressure our churches to provide more help for the poor and our city leaders. Affordable housing is almost non-existent in many cities. If affordable housing were available there wouldn’t be so many homeless.
No. This is not about abortion. This is about the poor and immigrants, about the economic system in our country that allows some people to be obscenely wealthy while others struggle living on the streets, or living paycheck to paycheck. Catholicism is womb to tomb.
Not at all. I have two daughters and four grandchildren. I am against abortion. But, abortion is not the preeminent issue of the apostolic exhortation Pope Leo released, nor is it the preeminent issue of the Catholic Church.
You don't know what you are saying. Yes, it is the preeminent issue of the Catholic Church or should be..
."Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27.
What more distressed orphan is there than an unborn baby murdered by its own mother. Our religion is dependent on looking after them.

These are blessed words.
Nothing — nothing — is more powerful.

Yes, our country is a cesspool. Only we can change it with love and Catholic Social Teaching.

Thank you for the timely reminder of the message the Gospels which is very different than the creed of greed in the “Prosperity Gospel”.
Just started digging through this. Love this: “https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/apost_exhortations/documents/20251004-dilexi-te.html#:~:text=While%20significant%20changes,in%20fact%20destitute.

Who are the poorest of the poor? They are the unborn in danger of abortion.

You are hard hearted to the unborn.
