I reached out to my diocese and asked about what actions they were taking to support immigrants and fight gun violence. I got crickets. Not all the Bishops seem to care…

It’s refreshing to read about how many US bishops are speaking up and out about the immigration crisis/ICE raids and gun violence. Their voices must unite into a collective leadership that inspires positive changes. I would encourage all Catholics and every person of good will to write supportive letters directly to those bishops. Leaders need supportive allies too.

As for my archdiocese, I am appalled to read in this week’s newsletter the myopic and self-aggrandizement that happened at the local seminary. Here’s the headline:

“Archbishop Cordileone consecrates St. Patrick's Seminary to the Immaculate Heart of Mary”

I wish I could share the picture - a throwback to pre-VCII - as well but here’s the links to the article: https://sfarch.org/consecrating-st-patricks-seminary-to-the-immaculate-heart-of-mary-an-in-depth-look-at-its-significance/

I am not against traditional devotions or consecrations. I am concerned though about the atmosphere in which they occur. A seminary that trains men for the priesthood must ALSO ensure they can relate to people and the issues confronting them. They must ensure all candidates have a solid grasp on the social teachings of the Church and be able to speak convincingly about those teachings. They must be knowledgeable of current Church priorities like synodality and support the pope whether they agree with him or not. Currently we have an isolated group of men, led by our Archbishop, whose ascendant clericalism is doing and will do great harm. It’s tragic.

In his own words:

“Echoing his call to the faithful of the Archdiocese, Archbishop Cordileone asked the Seminary community to pray the rosary daily, adding penance to their lives such as fasting on Fridays throughout the year, availing themselves to the Sacrament of Penance, spending time in Eucharistic Adoration. Living the consecration comes with a promise, said the archbishop. ‘As Our Lady said at Fatima, ‘In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.’’”

I wonder what “triumph” he may have in mind? There is absolutely no mention of loving tenderly, acting justly, and walking humbly with God (Micah 6:8). And there is certainly no mention of doing anything to improve our social conditions. Praying the rosary and going to confession must lead to wise action that builds a better Church and society. It must lead to risk-taking on behalf of Truth and justice; otherwise, they are empty and meaningless acts.

Every Catholic, every person who identifies as Christian should be in front of the fight to restrict gun sales. Death by guns is the #1 killer of American Children. Anyone who is Pro-life should be at the forefront of protest and demanding new gun laws. If you do not fight for stricter gun laws, you cannot be PRO-LIFE.🙏🏽

I'm encouraged that the archbishop spoke up. Prolife includes making our society safe for all, especially our children. The gun laws must include intense background checks and banning guns that shoot many rounds of ammunition.

It is worth remembering that tools always carry two edges.

From the first city of Cain to today, human craft can either deepen the fall or hold chaos back. A plow feeds, a sword defends, yet the same iron can destroy.

Seeing both sides clearly might help us choose wisely which tools to ban, which to allow, and how to govern their use so that matter serves life instead of swallowing it in violence.
