Inspired by the work of Pope Leo's first U.S. appointment, San Diego Bishop Michael Pham, Texas clergy are stepping into courthouses to shield migrants from sudden deportation.
I am so proud and honored , by the fact, Catholic Church is standing up to people who are gerrymandering their congressional districts and helping the migrants, who truly deserve help in this country. Reinforces, my faith and belief we are all, God’s and Christ children. Blessings and prayers to them and you , Chris.
This is the Gospel with skin on. Standing in the gap when the system tries to disappear people is holy work. The courage of these priests and nuns is a rebuke to fear and a reminder that love doesn’t wait for permission.
My Sister’s religious order has established a new convent in San Antonio to take up social justice for migrants of all kinds. These woman are front line workers for Christ’s teachings. Our American Pope has spoken.
The GOP can never reference they are the party of law and order ever again. Saw the ICE is running out of money. Maybe we should just go on a tax strike and see what happens. Americans should just keep there money for their families since we have a government that is just concerned about image but really has zero interest in solving major economic issues such as livable wages, healthcare and education or obeying our constitution and its laws. It is just on a spending spree with no really concern about using our money for the welfare of the people of this country. Time to say the dime stops with us the American People of this country.
I think herein lies the problem. As originally conceived, political asylum was meant to cover legitimate political dissidents from the post-WW2 East Bloc. It has morphed into a cottage industry of endless court dates and claims based on economic distress and domestic abuse.
The people being detained at courthouses are those trying to follow the law. This is literally what they were told to do when they arrived at the border or first met an immigration official.
It is, apparently, nominally "legal" to arrest them if the government drops the case, in effect saying we're not going to bother working through the actual legal process we set up and told them to follow. It's certainly not aligned with the spirit of the asylum law, or what we used to call "American values."
The thing is, I don’t see how you can have a system that offers 5-10 years of court dates, filings, documents, etc to the ~20 million illegals aliens we have here now and to the tens of millions who very much wish to come here, and would enter in violation of the law if they could.
The flawed system is not the point here. The point is these immigrants are trying to follow the law. They were instructed, by American officials, to go to the courthouse. They get to the courthouse and are grabbed by ICE thugs. Who thinks up this kind of cruelty? Thank God for the clergy
The system lets 1M people emigrate to the U.S. legally every here. Laws sometimes conflict. I was watching ICE arrest an illegal migrant in Rhode Island, after his court date. He had multiple sexual assault charges on his rap sheet, including acts involving minors. I have no idea if he exhausted all of his appeals in the various courts to which he’s subject. If ICE can pick him up and keep him until he is sent to his native country, I’m grateful. He doesn’t belong here and his country of origin is perfectly fine.
You remind me that there are wonderful people in the world.

They teach that people needn’t obey the law?

Is it illegal for ICE to arrest someone here illegally, even if they make their immigration court dates?
