I watched a video on YouTube a couple of years ago about business men from Silicon Valley and elsewhere who were/are trying to take over America to run it the way they want. Biden was still president and now Trump is for the second time. He has destroyed our democracy, our economy, and our country within nine months. I’m 73 and used to think the United States was the most wonderful country in the world. If I were 40-50 years younger I would move. I don’t think the hate and division will ever go away. This is not what the founders wanted.
Can we all agree on algorithm reform, you ask? Probably not because we no longer have a shared set of values that keeps tribalism at bay. This is also the work of unchecked algorithms. No matter who is in power, they will bend the algorithm to their will. So, the corporations who code these algorithms and set them loose, ensure they maximize their profits.
What, then, needs reform? WE need reform. Each individual must now do the hard work of weaning himself or herself of social media and engaging the community around them. We must learn to live in our immediate moment where we truly see each other and appreciate one another. Social media will not allow this to happen. It can’t because it prioritizes the misery of self-referential isolation. What I want, what I think, what I feel matters most.
How many people can really embrace a higher consciousness that sees things as they are and not as social media would like them to see? All of us really but it’s difficult to change. We can look to Pope Leo and the late Pope Francis as examples.
Just now on instagram they showed a video of Charlie Kirk getting shot I was so upset by them taking this video to that full level of the actual footage it was shocking and they think it’s okay well it’s not okay
The algorithm is much like the evil one and maybe is under his control. It tempts us and rewards us with violence and evil, and leads us to addiction to social media outrage. However, it can only control us to the degree that we allow it to, at some point we must accept responsibility for our desires and decisions and cry out to God to be set free from its addictive power. And then learn to begin to actively choose that which is True, Good and Beautiful! We must seek God in everything and seek HIS WILL IN Everything if we truly want to be free of this technoslavery called social media!
These days, I keep thinking about the Robbers Cave experiment (1954) and what we can learn from it.
