I emailed and invited our local Catholic Church to joinour weekly peaceful protest in Southlake Tx. I did not receive a response and no one showed up in solidarity. That’s why I have stepped away from the church. I see hope in Pope Leo, but with Abbott as our governor in our red state, I think churches don’t want to cast waves. I asked my mother if she knew of the statement from US bishops as I had hoped priests would have read the statement in church, she knew nothing about it.

Unsurprising.

That said, we have much to be thankful for.

Let us go forward, in faith and in Grace.

May God richly bless and keep you.

I stand with Pope Leo.

This is why the Holy Spirit lead the Conclave to elect Pope Leo--to lead us out of this disaster.

Pope Saint John Paul dedicated his life to freedom from fear and oppression. He did a bang-up job, if you ask me.

“To our neighbors who are afraid— we will protect you.

To Donald Trump, JD Vance, and all the MAGA purveyors of cruelty and lies — we will defeat you.

And to our children and our posterity — as long as God gives us breath, we will work every day to leave this nation and this world better than we found it.”

Amen.

I'm no longer a Catholic, but I am impressed by the Pope's leadership, and by the American bishops' (and other clerics) forthright condemnation of the horrific abuses here. Perhaps some Protestant leaders are speaking out, but if so I haven't heard them. The Catholic Church seems to be the only group that consistently calls the actions of the administration and its minions, what they are.

It breaks my heart that bishops have had to issue waivers releasing the faithful from the Sunday obligation, due to parishioners' fear of being abducted. This should not happen in a supposedly 'free' country.

Thank you for your posts on all topics. They have been enlightening.

I agree with the rhetoric and inhumane treatment of migrants has been a relevant evil. However, what next? Democrats do not offer a better solution for migrants, nor do the left actually follow Catholic social teaching on immigration.

Deportation in of itself is a neutral moral act. It is not evil or good, but a necessary act of the government if it is needed.

There has been pendulum swing of extremes from in the last 6 years that shows either party does not understand nor adhere to Catholic social teaching.

Why would either party understand Catholic Social Teaching (CST)? They are political parties and some may be Catholic but not all. Evangelicals who are Christian nationalists don’t believe in social justice, just authoritarianism.

I guess, I meant Catholics who engaged in politics and associate themselves with either party. They fall into their parties’ ideology and both parties have failed to gain the trust for migrants.

Nancy Stone's avatar

Exactly! They put politics before their faith. Sadly a lot of Catholics are like that.

I think that is why I appreciate the bishops who have been outspoken about this issue without sounding like a politician. It is unique we have a Pope from our backyard who understands the political landscape but doesn’t speak in the political lingo, rather from an eternal perspective.

Why did 55 per cent of Catholics vote for Trump in 2024?

Joey Peters's avatar

Where does the 39% stat come from? I don't see it in the linked Pew report.

There are other Protestant Leaders that are standing up against this Administration such as Episcopal and Presbyterian. But all Christian leaders need to stand firmly on the teachings of Christ.

Well as a Bernie or Buster, I’d say not uniting. I’d stay independent and hope for a revolution. The Democrats were so evil that I’m not sure how anyone could forgive or forget them.

The linked poll does not mention the 39% approval rating....please provide a link to the that poll is being referenced ?

Bambi Vargo's avatar

I followed your link to the Pew polling, and I cannot find where you cite, "39% of Catholics approve of Trump." I want this to be true to share confidently with others, but I do not want to share it until I see it myself. Can you please help?
