The bishops would have been better advised to have done an exorcism in the Oval Office.

...or at least splash holy water on everyone of them...and record their reactions.

E C's avatar

He was invited, and willingly went to trumps White House. Okay.

My question is, what did he think was going to happen? Maybe trump would beg forgiveness or have a confession?

Getting really tired of religious people acting like anything trump does is normal.

You missed the point! Read it again…

Your Excellency, you should not have been there. The man you went to see is one of the most godless individuals to ever walk the earth. His claim to Christianity is just another charlatan's tool in his cheap bag of tricks

You were used for a photo opportunity. It came across as a shameful endorsement.

You want to make it up? You want to do penance? Go parade in front of an ICE facility with a placard that reads: "We are all God's children." And if you get arrested at least you will be seen as authentically trying to live the Gospel.

What… Jesus ate with sinners…

Gerald Morris's avatar

Yes, He did, but the sinners he ate with were corrigible, and repentant. Trump is neither. Jesus did NOT bless the "generation of vipers" or the money changers in front of the Temple, be sure of that.

RIGHT ON! GOD BLESS YOU!!

Having worked for USCCB for years, all I can say is that this was a case of really poor staff work. The staff at the USCCB have as their highest responsibility to protect the bishops from scandal and public humiliation. That didn't happen here. Something really needs to be done to improve staff support. JMTC...

Mike Murray's avatar

As I understand it (and maybe I misunderstand), the USCCB was not consulted about this event and had no opportunity to provide information, let alone advice, to the participants. In my view, their failure to consult with the pope, with the nuncio, and with their brother bishops -- that is, their failure to think and act collegially -- is at the root of this debacle. The twelve bishops involved should apologize precisely for that.

Gerald Morris's avatar

NO! We need an episcopate which is clean of fools, and worse, of such magnitude demonstrated by this scandal. Let us pray that His Holiness Leo XIV CAN FIND REPLACEMENTS for these SEVERELY ERRANT, CORRUPT BISHOPS, then excommunicates them as a Warning to the True Faithful.

Trump/MAGA has become the WORST EVIL on this planet today. What will it take to make people see this clearly, Trump ordering a nuclear strike on Tehran or another great city? He LUSTS to perpetrate just such an atrocity people. Donald Trump and his minions know fully well the gravity of their evil, and delight in doing it. If the episcopate in this land, or any other fails to correctly assess the true spiritual threat in MAGA, then we must pray for our individual deliverance, for such a church is DEAD.

The bishops were invited by the Heritage Foundation. Enough said.

Grob and the other bishops are educated “leaders”’and were well aware of implied and actual intent.

These men and their ilk are the reason so many have left the pews.

Christ would have flipped the Resolute Desk.

Dee Papa's avatar

I accept the apology.

Jane27's avatar

It seems genuine. A friend who knows him was shocked. He should have decided to act on reservations.

Lori Stone's avatar

Peer pressure at their ages is ridiculous! I feel bad for them that the moment left them totally unprepared and confused...lessons learned for all religious leaders. Trump has been a manipulator all of his messed up life and not ever to be trusted. When he's nice, he has some agenda to make himself look good at anyone's expense. He has ZERO moral standards as does his entire family and all of his administration. God help us all. God have mercy on our country.🙏🗽🙏

Gerald Morris's avatar

It's genuine enough, but this well meaning fool doesn't go far enough. let us educate him better regarding the gravity of his sin here. Let him apologize to inmates in an ICE concentration camp.

Geri Cochran's avatar

I just don't think any of them were stupid enough to not realize the implications. But, just like magas who lie: this guy is lying to himself and his God, imo. That's why he needs a quiet place with no maga news for a few months so that he can be deprogrammed. IF the Pope doesn't do this, how will the people know if any holy person is trustworthy?

This is a cult... This guy bowed to the felon...Can you imagine meeting God upon your natural death and telling GOD what you did, and trying to lie to God that you didn't mean it? smdh I'm fine leaving their eternal life to God. But I am not fine with these bishops and archbishops' hypocrisy; or their continuation as a powerful voice of God. :(

Gerald Morris's avatar

I'll accept apologies of these prelates when their apologies repair the damage they have done. Let these errant shepherds now collectively DENOUNCE TRUMP AND HIS REGIME, then we can accept some apologies.

Jimmy LaSalvia's avatar

“He also accused the White House of manipulating that prayer.” FYI - the Devil is cunning.

Ann Laabs's avatar

I was one of those calling and contacting the Milwaukee Archdiocese about Grob's White House visit. Whatever their intentions, I still can't believe nobody realized what this would look like, or how the White House would use it. It is good to see a sincere apology from Archbishop Grob.

I am acutely aware that those who admit transgressions and ask for forgiveness should be forgiven. In my head, using trains of thought, I can do this. However, my heart is heavy. You walked into hell and serviced a demon. You were offered trinkets that you accepted and took away. On his direction you lined up behind him and offered him blessings and only one of you is concerned with your complicity?

I’m not going to lose my way because of your transgressions. I know when you ask for forgiveness with honest intentions, forgiveness should be granted. Does it count if 11 of you are told that you need to repent? I’m struggling with that and it’s going to take some time. You got played by the biggest con, thief, convicted felon, liar, rapist, pedophile, pedophile protector, adulterer, narcissistic psychopath in modern times and 11 of you feel that you owe no apology or explanation? This is a challenge for me but I’ll get through it. The Lord didn’t bring me this far to drop me now. He woke me up this morning so he ain’t through with me yet.

JustinMac's avatar

Now we wait for the 11 other to make the same apology.

Geri Cochran's avatar

You wait. I've already used my critical thinking skills, and an apology is nothing. words... nothing.

Let them resign and relocate to a silent monastery, so they can use the time for introspection. They need to decide if they are following Jesus Christ's teachings, or trump's cruelest lessons. Then they need to retire.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

You're right that words alone are not enough. Making amends involves action, a change in behavior. Your prescription doesn't allow for that.

Gerald Morris's avatar

RIGHT ON!!!! Let us rally support for His Holiness Leo XIV to EXCOMMUNICATE THESE FALLEN BISHOPS FORTHWITH!

Don’t hold your breath.

Father read the letter during mass this morning and he followed it with a beautiful sermon regarding immigrants, love your neighbor! ❤️🇺🇸💙

The bishops should have realized that DJT would remake their responses to make him, as usual, the focal point, the "only one in the room." They obviously weren't thinking clearly to even show up. What a mess!

Jim Lund's avatar

I first met Archbishop Grob when he was a seminarian, and get to know him a little bit when he was in new ordained priest. I was very disappointed to learn that he was among the bishops with Trump last week. However, I take his apology to be genuine. It reflects the man I knew many decades ago. The fact that he is with people from his archdiocese, who are visiting a sister parish in the Dominican Republic, is also a compelling statement about his character and concerns. I hope his brother Bishops follow his lead.

Mary's avatar

Bishops should not place their persons anywhere near Trump or Vance! They've told us: scorpions and liars! Why are we so slow to learn?

Jacobs-Meadway Roberta's avatar

Archbishop Grob went with misgivings. The event was at least in part pretextual but not blatantly so.

Once he and the others were instructed to stand behind the seated President and pray over him, whether or not they saw a videographer there, they should have recognized the set up and stepped back, politely. Clergy of that rank are not generally naive.

Granted all that, the apology is welcome and it would inspire the others who were misled to apologize in similar fashion. Those who were there and were not misled might contemplate the distress of others and attempt to understand why their actions gave some offense to people whose lives have been adversely impacted directly by the actions of this Administration which in no way reflect the values and teachings of the Gospels.
