The pope’s first encyclical takes on autonomous weapons, the layoff cycle behind generative AI, and the algorithmic capture of democracy — and asks whether the dignity of the human person can survive.
Beautifully stated, Christopher. You’ve given this non-Catholic enough background information to make me feel ready to tackle Leo’s encyclical in full. Thanks!
Much appreciated. Saw Archbishop Paul Coakley issued a video statement on the encyclical for the USCCB — interesting given his concurrent role as ecclesiastical advisor to the Napa Institute. Would love to hear your observations on this if you haven’t done so already.
Fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to read and digest and interpret his words. This was a meaningful read for this X-Catholic who is finding it intriguing to see the changes in the Church.
I second that. Thank you, so much, Christopher for all the work you're doing in bringing the message of Pope Leo to lay people, whether Catholic or not.
It's clear from your overview how important the Pope's first encyclical is to what may be the biggest question, and challenge of our time (apart from climate change): What does the world hold for humanity in a world with AI? Will AI be a helpmate to humanity or its destroyer? The Pope brings a critical lens upon the path the technocrats are on and calls out for a change in direction, for the sake of all of us.
I started to read the entire document this morning. Quite a mouthful! I particularly like the foundation Leo lays by setting out the principals of Catholic Social Teaching that have been chronicled by a number of successors to Leo XIII over the past 135 years — common good, dignity of the human person and so forth.
As Cardinal Czerny recently noted, the Church must enter into the political arena, but without being labeled as partisan. This letter definitely does that. Its importance cannot be overstated.
Thank you for your work here. This is a critical moment of teaching by this Pope. While scholars, theologians, journalists and other curious learners will read it all, so many will only consume only the one- liners offered in social media. It will be interesting to see how it gets played in light of this Pope's popularity.
Interesting, too, that both the English Kindle and paperback formats on Amazon ( not so in other languages) are not available til July 1. Astonishing in this day and age!! Thank God for downloads.
Thank you. Profoundly thank you.
Thank you for this overview of “Magnifica Humanitas”! Your writing has distilled and amplified Leo’s message.
My favorite nugget from your observations: “A civilization that promises to abolish weakness will end up by abolishing the people it considers weak.”

Unregulated AI is a STAIN.
Trans humanism is a STAIN
Techno fascism is a STAIN.
Resist!

Thanks for writing this, it was great

Bravo Leo!
Agree! Thank you, Leo

Just incredible. We are blessed with his vision and leadership. I feel called to walk with Leo.
Thank you for doing this for us. It is greatly appreciated
Thank you for the great summary and your first takes. I’m looking forward to reading the entire encyclical.
