Speaking off the cuff at Borgo Laudato si’, the pope named his hungers: justice, authentic charity, and a Church where no one is an enemy. The meal he improvised in Albano last August now has a permanent place on the Vatican calendar.
I love that Pope Francis changed Castel Gandolfo into something that the community can benefit from. Pope Leo now gets to show how Castel Gandolfo can belong to everyone, not just be his summer home. Food is very much one of Pope Leo's love languages.
I think that's one of the benefits of him not being a native speaker of Italian. He kind of speaks more clearly because of it. When a language is our native language, we are often sloppier. I enjoy hearing him speak Italian as well because I have studied it but of course it is harder for me to understand when a native speaker is speaking it then when he speaks. What a wonderful bridge builder he is!
Yes, Italian is his L2 . . (or maybe his L3?!) but he does a great job with his second (or third) language! Almost like a native speaker .. but definitely no "sloppiness"! Beautiful articulation! What you say is so true, Dr. Winston. I taught English for Speakers of Other Languages at a large public high school in Miami for 25 years. So easy to see that language, any language, shared or even attempted to be shared, is a "bridge." As Pope Leo explained: "Un ponte." And, as you also said, a "bridge builder"! Would that our world had more of them!
Your reports are much appreciated. This Pope in carrying on the work of his predecessor models how he and the leaders of the Church and of other faiths can be the example of what holy action can look like.

I so enjoy listening to Pope Leo speak in Italian - and the translation into English that accompanies it. Grazie, Christopher.

I applaud those who preach to keep us ALL united... especially NOW... when we realize that WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER!!
Thank you, our own dear Papa Leo and Christopher for making letters from Leo available for us all. Amen.
