Hours after the U.S. bishops’ president called the Pentagon’s livestreamed firing squad barbaric, JD Vance said only that he wouldn’t watch. Pope Leo XIV saw this coming.
The Republican Party is more pro-poverty than pro-life. They must’ve heard someone say the Good Lord loves poor people so they’re working overtime to make sure the Good Lord has plenty to love.
Granted, my first comment was too flip. On a far more serious note, this scares me with respect to the potential response. So I'm begging those who are so furious they might do something rash.
Please understand that violence tends to beget more violence. It should be crystal clear that executing anyone publicly is designed to do just that. They are practically BEGGING for a violent retaliation so they can call in the military or invoke martial law. DO NOT TAKE THAT BAIT!!!!
Though l do not trust shady j.d. any further than I can throw him and, while I agree with your thesis of the incompatibility of being 'pro-life' with favouring the death penalty, the comparison of liar-liar-vance-on-fire with Pontius Pilate strikes me as not quite fair.
Saying that he is not sure the streaming of the execution will occur may imply that vance is lobbying behind-the-scenes to slap hegseth back into place. The latter-day Alcibiades should also lobby for elimination of the death penalty.
Thank you for underlining the GOP's decades long hypocrisy in it's laughable claim to be pro-life and pointing out how Vance is no better than Pontius Pilate. The naked cruelty of the GOP has finally stepped out from behind the curtain for all to see.
To watch a livestream of the firing squad is like going back in time and watching the crowds cheering at the guillotine-absolutely barbaric! The Republican party under Trump has lost its soul, if it ever nad one.
A misleading headline, Christopher: look at the record - and wince.
Democrats were prominent among the original pro-lifers. long before Roe v. Wade, back in the 1960's when Catholic bishops ducked for cover because they were just revving up the billions in taxpayer cash they've gotten from LBJ's Greeat Society welfare programs since the 60's.
According Catholic historian James Hitchcock, even after Democrats became the party of death (following Mario Cuomo's mantra, "I oppose abortion but"), millions of Democrats in the pews were still pro-life. Bill Clinton turned that around, and by the time Obama and Biden came out full-force for unlimited abortion "rights," pro-abortion Republicans like Chuck Percy, Warren Rudman, and Nancy Kassebaum were long gone.
Unfortnately, even today, few Catholic bishops will speak out strongly on abortion when it's on the ballot. Virginia's Knestout and Burbidge have done so, bravely - because their fellow shepherds (+Cupich , McElRoy, and the rest of the Ted McCarrrick brood) frown on "politicizing" the issue. Gives them bad press.
Planned Parenthood's own website affirms that in 1967, virtually every State in the Union had laws against abortion -most of them calling it a capital crime like murder and rape.
And yes, it's still murder, pure and simple.
In recent years, +Leo's generation of US bishops have rhapsodized over the billions that Obama and Biden lavished on them to import so many millions of illegal immigrants with their secular NGO's.
Trump cut them off, and now they want their money back.
So does Pope Leo. They've driven 50 million from the pews in the US anf 50 million more in Latin America with "liberation theology," not to mention the billions they've had to pay out to victims of their abuse-and-coverup scandals.
Follow the money, folks.
And pray for our bishops - they're the only ones we've got.

Agreed 111%, especially with the second paragraph; than you, O.B.A.

Pax Christi!
So JD is the Pontius Pilate of the 21st century… But perhaps I should quit insulting someone who has been dead for 2 millennium.
This is fiendish!
