Donohue is not a Gospel Christian. With his dedication to his own self-interest and interest in fomenting division among people, he has disqualified himself from speaking on behalf of anyone other than himself and his own self interest. He would better serve by remaining open to receiving those who neither look like him nor pray in the same manner as potential colleagues in an effort to increase connection in the service of the public good.
Donohue goes after the gays, the Muslims, whoever he doesn't like, blasting his personal prejudices out in press releases. FOX News puts him on television all the time as if he speaks for the whole Catholic Church and the Pope!!! Sick stuff, really.
There is very small minority of the the Catholic Church which specializes in grievance— they are unhappy that the Pope prays for clean water and the environment, they are unhappy about the language of the Mass, they are unhappy that the Church believes in empathy, and in the US they are unhappy that the Muslim mayor of New York City is planning to attend the 9/11 Memorial Services and the Memorial Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Bill Donohue, who makes a remarkably large salary as the head of the Catholic League (primarily for writing press releases), has said that Mayor Mamdani should not be allowed to attend the Memorials, because he’s a Muslim. Some of the victims’ family members have said the same— others have said the opposite. [At least 60 of the victims in the Twin Towers were themselves Muslim, a fact too often overlooked.]
The family members have a right to their opinions, of course. Donohue is another story. How is it that he had these families with him for his City Hall press conference? It seems unlikely that the families would have recruited him of all people to stand beside them when Rudy Giuliani or some other right wing politician would have made more sense and more of an impact. Far more likely, he recruited them— and is using their grief and anger for his own purposes.
Donohue does not represent the Catholics of New York— he represents a small, angry minority that pays him lots of money to be their loud voice. The Catholics of the Archdiocese of New York are represented by Archbishop Hicks, the man who invited the Mayor to Mass at the Cathedral.
Pretty nervy to tell the Mayor of NYC that he has no place at the 9/11 ceremonies. I’m glad our new Archbishop is able to see past the bigoted nonsense of these so called Catholics.
Does the Archbishop have anything to say to Bill Donoghue? Donoghue does not seem to be representing the Catholic view of community. I hope someone can change the name of his organization as he seems very prejudiced.
As a NY Catholic who’s worked in the church all of my life, I can assure you that Bill Donohue has been a thorn in the side of the Catholic mission since he’s appeared. It’s a shame since he could be doing good, yet willfully chooses not to.

As a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom who suffers from PTSD, I have been told by the Church that it does not care to hear my problems. You see, the Church does not want wounded warriors, because we are broken people. People to be discarded. “Life not worthy of life.” That is Bishop Barron, with Word On Fire, That is Archbishop Broglio, That is Peter Thiel, That is Tim Busch, That is William Donahue. Maybe St Francis hugged a leper, but the American Catholic Church won’t, because lepers have no money. The spirit of Cardinal Law, Cardinal McCarrick, Cardinal Dolan, and Cardinal Wuerhl is alive and well in the American Roman Catholic Church, which is why Synodality has never had a chance, because clerics don’t want to listen to the laity, and apparently neither does Letters From Leo. Jesus didn’t say anything about men using women’s bathrooms, but he said a lot about hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and refusing to help others in need.
As I said. There was a climate of fear and persecution that shrouds the Roman Catholic Church, brought on by Wojtyla and Ratzinger. Donahue has profited by that climate of fear. I had been told that Letters from Leo did not share the fear, but my posting was hidden from view, because I told the truth of my experience in the Church. Just like the reddits r/Catholic and r/Catholicism and even r/exCatholic. Donahue complains about “heresy” to the Vatican, the NAPA Institute dictates to the USCCB what is acceptible, and lay catholics are expected to march in lockstep or to prepare to be immolated at the stake.
None of this is surprising to me, some things never change but it is sad. Unfortunately, there will continue to be those who exploit division because it fits their world view.
It is such a relief these days, to be proud of what my church does instead of constantly apologizing for the American bishops’ hypocrisy.
