Pope Leo XIV was elected one year ago today, on May 8, 2025. I’m republishing my essay from Time on the afternoon of his election — a record of the providential gift no American expected.
I think it is important to ALWAYS clarify that Leo is the first Pope from the USA. He is the 2nd American Pope. Francis was the first. We North Americans are so self-centered! Leo's election is another signal that the Spirit wants the Church is focus on the global South.
What an incredible first year for Pope Leo XIV this has been. As a cradle Catholic I am feeling hope, belief and trust he is the right person to lead the Church and be on the national stage at this time. God bless and keep him in my daily prayers.

The Americas=Western Hemisphere=All people of the North, Central, and South America are Americans. 🌎
That's right!!! Pope Francis was the first ... I am constantly correcting people ... we do forget that there is a SOUTH America!!!
And a Central America🌎
Our country is divisive, full of hate and selfishness. I pray that by having Pope Leo, someone from the U.S., our attitudes will change.
