This week, top MAGA allies of Donald Trump launched their first coordinated assault to silence and destroy the pontificate of the American pope.

What was Pope Leo XIV’s crime? Telling the truth about Donald Trump and MAGA.

He said that treating immigrants like pawns on the chessboard of humanity isn’t pro-life. He said that Pete Hegseth is a foolish warmonger. He said that destroying the planet is an affront to Almighty God.

Trump and his enablers hate the truth. But Jesus tells us in the Gospel of John that the truth shall set us free.

And here’s the truth: our nation is in trouble. Darkness corrodes our people and our way of life.

As I told Mike Nellis and Mike Madrid in today’s Substack Live, there are two pathways forward for America — Trump and his MAGA disciples, or Leo and the Gospel.

The choice is ours.

For context on how this all started, watch the clip below. And if you have time, I encourage you to watch the entire episode.

I’ll never forget attending Pope Leo’s inaugural Mass on May 18.

He declared that day: “This is the hour of love!”

If this is truly an hour of love, then our response to America’s darkest moments must be to love more fiercely. I’m convinced that our faith still has something to offer for the renewal of our nation.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a perfect — or even particularly good — messenger.

I’m a sinner, a work in progress, and because of that, I often feel uneasy writing about my faith in public life.

Nevertheless, here I am.

In Pope John Paul I’s words: “I offer you the little that I have and am.”

I offer you my back, my mind, my heart, and my love for this Church and this country, both blessed and both broken.

Thank you for reading. It means the world to me.

Letters from Leo is open to anyone who wants to be informed and inspired by our pope — and to turn that inspiration into action that leaves America and the world more just, less cold, and more alive with hope.

On this feast of the Guardian Angels, I’ll leave you with one last thought.

My patron, St. Christopher, is the patron of travelers — especially those who’ve lost their way.

Our nation, I think, has indeed lost its path.

So if you pray with the angels and the saints, tonight might be the night to ask St. Christopher to watch over us and guide our nation home.

Let us rise, then, fellow travelers, and be on our way.

I’ll see you on the road.
