You all are helping this lapsed Catholic come back! Can’t tell you how great it is to find Catholics who are expressing the sentiment I have felt for a long time. I’m loving this. Thank you. ❤️

I'm very interested again, too, due to the new Pope and these discussions. MAGA is NOT pro life, not kind, not loyal to the Constitution, not Christian.

Do you see James Talarico as a good upcoming Democratic candidate in future elections?

For Catholic GOP not to support the Pope is telling. The Holy Spirit picks a Pope: you must not believe in the Holy Spirit. 🙏🏼

and yes you are 100% right about Pope John Paul II and why he was elected - he was instrumental in strengthening the fight for freedom and solidarity. he performed some incredible feats to help the underground resistance in poland and solidarnosc. ❤️

Love your columns Christopher!

Imagine calling the pope a Marxist because he reminded you that cages, oil spills, and war drums aren’t pro-life. Trump crowns Pete Hegseth his saint of warmongers, and Leo calls it what it is: heresy in a red tie. MAGA wants a chaplain for empire. The Church gave them a mirror instead. Blessed be the ones who follow love when it ruins their politics.

Pope Leo must feel so disappointed to be nulled and voided by a US podcaster after so many hundred years of papacy.

Proudly pro-life and pro-choice and pro-democracy.... In January, 1971, my High School Biology class was learning what determined things to be “alive.” I was not aware of Roe v. Wade; and the teacher had folks debate as to whether a fetus was a human being. From THAT discussion, I determined that I PERSONALLY believed that human life began at conception…. I was also completely unaware that my Catholic church had any “declarations” about the issue. Nevertheless, because of my personal belief, I did what I thought Jesus required in terms of caring for the needy children, and at age 22, with a one-year-old baby, we opened our home for foster children who did not have parents to care for them at the time.

I was always annoyed with folks spending time outside of abortion clinics, thinking that they could have been of service to the poor, rather than passing judgment and ready to stone folks to death for having different beliefs - completely contrary to the teaching of Jesus.

I have had several friends who have had abortions. I do not judge them, because Genesis indicated that God bestows the BREATH of life… not the heartbeat… I don’t think ANYONE can know when God bestows a soul to a person for sure. I just don’t think it is any of my business. Jesus showed us the way… and Pope Leo seems to be following in the footsteps of kindness and love.

Just a gentle suggestion: having a woman (Sarah Longwell) with you would be a WONDERFUL addition to your Substack.

Pro life is not what right wing politics & faith leaders believe. It's pro birth, that's it! Look how many women that have died since SCOTUS overturned Ro v Wade! Women experiencing the trauma of a miscarriage have been left to die in many states!

More than that: we need to support people who have children.
