This is good news. If the Church was able to sideline Ripperger, then let’s hope that Bishop Robert Barron is next.

The notion of a "celebrity exorcist" used to be, and ought to be, oxymoronic. The fact that Fr. Ripperger used his celebrity to promote MAGA ideology exacerbates the scandal of celebrity in this context. Good on Father Carr!

So glad. Some of my most faithful Catholic friends have followed this priest and it is not helping them see truth or grow closer to God. It is making them fearful of so much and driving wedges between them and their children.

Geri Cochran's avatar

Well, I had friends like that too...Only they all morphed into MAGAS, and they absolutely want to threaten and harm those of us they can't convince to come over to their selfish side. I no longer care that their souls will be deficient upon their natural deaths. I've done what I could. I've been assaulted for it. They'll have to take care of their own poor souls...and all the murder and kidnapping that it includes.

Ashleigh Richards's avatar

These friends are also all maga. The church i go to has most of its lay leaders who are maga and im trying to find somewhere else. North Texas...

I'll pray you find a more wholesome parish, Deo volente! As a North Texass refugee myself, II finally fled to Tucson to escape Repugnantpig-prottie oppression, and by the Grace of God have found as much shelter as a man can expect in these evil times. I advise you to seek a parish which has a strong Hispanic contingent, as MAGAots seldom do well with their target victim demographic. I thank the Lord for the Faithful we've found here in the Old Pueblo; Deo gratias!

Now, if Rome would only reassign Bp. Barron. He perhaps could serve as the chaplain/confessor to an order of elderly Italian nuns in Sicily…

Geri Cochran's avatar

I don't know. Priests and Bishops have harmed nuns as well: paid them serf's waged, raped them even...I prefer solitary confinement, to allow him plenty of time to correct his grievous errors before his natural death. This way he'd have no distractions. And isn't this about saving his soul?

Gerald Morris's avatar

Its about saving HIS soul, yes, BUT ALSO SAVING THE SOULS OF THE FAITHFUL, including those Innocent Lambs in Christ's flock who should be kept from harm. All the same, a good, tough Mother Superior should do well to drive any demons abiding in this evil cleric back to Hell AND shelter her Little Flowers too!

Kimberlyanne's avatar

Why move them around to cause more harm?? Why not fire them? The Catholic Church hasn't learned their lesson from this? The nuns don't need to be put in these situations!

Gerald Morris's avatar

I know a convent right here in Tucson that could teach the likes of this false priest some humility! Yes, indeedy, you've put a MOST excellent notion before us....

Belly of the Beast's avatar

Yes, they could handle him.

Pam Caputo's avatar

Oh, I don't think we want that! Knowing all my female Sicilian relatives and how they react, it would be a giant scandal for the church as they would probably take a rolling pin or two directed at him.

Annette Magyar's avatar

I'm Sicilian too and I agree!

This priests hateful misogyny is chilling. I can only imagine his feelings on race are similarly abhorrent. Glad this man is no longer in a position to warp more people or attract more bigots to the Church. It's these type of men who are attracted to power and hierarchy and use the Church as a tool of oppression that drove our hiatus from the Church to protect our daughter.

Annette Magyar's avatar

This priest needs to be defrocked if he doesn't stop. Thank goodness the Archbishop is stepping in.

Belly of the Beast's avatar

Perhaps, it is exorcism that begins at home. I do see evil in MAFA/Trump. How do we talk about that without sounding like the Ripperger crowd?

Mark terrell's avatar

You are right...much of that world seems diabolically influenced. I think we should be free to talk about that.

Steve Werkmeister's avatar

I grew up with the archbishop. He’s been a good dude since the beginning

One less MAGA priest talking is always a good thing.

Defrock AND excommunicate Ripperger.

But there seems to be a wider problem within the church in Colorado:

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy, a major case testing whether the Archdiocese of Denver and Catholic preschools can be excluded from Colorado's state-funded universal preschool program for refusing to enroll children with LGBTQ+ or same-sex parents.

Really? The church wants to exclude children because of their parents’ sexuality? I thought “The Catholic Church is back,” and it is a loving and inclusive church. What’s happening here? Does Pope Leo know about this case? If so, why is he allowing it to go forward? Just asking…

Dr_RichardBairdIII's avatar

Agree. One of the founders of the far right, discredited Pillar Substack is from Denver. They took Trump’s side over Pope Leo when discussing Just War theory. Something in the water in Denver. What’s not in that water- love, compassion and understanding.

What a headline 😂

Yep, that's the Church I remember, reminiscent of the priests who told their congregations they would go to Hell if they voted democrat, before both of the felon's terms. So, really one can thank these priests and the Catholic Church here in America, for supporting fascism: and the murders and the kidnappings, and the deportations. The Church needs to apologize, imo; even as they strive to correct the world going fascist.

Glad Ripperbuerger was told to go silent for a whole year. How many Catholics did he convince to join him? And how many of those will be going to Hell, because of this priest. smdh IMO a year is not enough time to de-cult a person if they continue listening and spreading lies.

And Barron? I won't give him any title. He doesn't deserve it. He's become as hateful as the savior he's apparently traded Jesus for, imo. The Catholics he turns into magas will follow him in his eternal life, I suppose.

I think Pope Leo is one of the holiest men I've known from afar. But, he's got a huge job ahead of him. My hope is that he doesn't morph into a maga like so many other 'religious' people.

Still praying for a full recovery.

Thank you for discussing. Have to go back to CS Lewis on this one: There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.

Good to see the Bishops are taking appropriate action.

DrJWinston's avatar

Whoa! That picture alone gives me the chills. What about it is a reflection of the way of Christ? When priests lose their way about what it is they are supposed to represent, which is the humble way of Christ rather than the death dealing actions of Empire, then the message of the church is destroyed both for the people who are part of the church as well as a world that needs to see the servant, life-giving way of Christ.

Kimberlyanne's avatar

Agree! People are hurting and vulnerable in the US. They also long for their faith! These priests or anyone under the vatican need to be removed, fired, excommunicated quicker. The damage has been done already for too many people.

Becky kelley's avatar

I agree and Bishop Barron should be next. He needs a year of silent retreat to find himself again as a servant of God and not a celebrity.

Ripperger isn't the only quack MAGAot phony exorcist with a collar in the U.S. these daze. We had one such putative "celebrity exorcist" come infest an altar and pulpit at Santa Cruz Catholic Chruch here in Tucson last year! This triple dung-dipped, Southern fried specimen hailed from Florida, congratulated itself on how "smart" he was, and defiled the Mass for over 90 minutes that Sunday evening. I don't recall its name, or want to, but it had a head of white hair and the same sort of southern Baptist accent televangelists are notorious for. My wife was so disgusted by this monster that she has not been to Mass since, so I say the devil did his job then.

I thank the Lord we haven't had this character return to our Diocese, and pray to St. Michael that such don't. "Exorcists" of this kind put me in mind of Acts 19:13-16, which reads:

13 Now some also of the Jewish exorcists who went about, attempted to invoke over them that had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying: I conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, that did this. 15 But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?

16 And the man in whom the wicked spirit was, leaping upon them, and mastering them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. ( https://www.drbo.org/cgi-bin/d?b=drb&bk=51&ch=19&l=13-#x )

So, we see that opportunist clerics sometimes get just chastisement for abusing the Lord's name and pretending to virtue they clearly lack! Let us take heart from this, and pray that these "showbiz exorcists" erupting in the Body of Holy church today needn't be made "naked and sorely wounded" before they repent, but alas, some of these types might merit just such therapy!
