I’m a retired special education teacher. I taught students with Down Syndrome cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, developmental delays, behavior disorders and learning disabilities. I taught these students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Middle school was my favorite. I’m just curious about when diversity in learning is approached why are only students with Down Syndrome are the focus? Is that the most acceptable disability?
It’s disgusting that Trump has made it acceptable to use the word retarded. I started teaching in 1974 and we educators worked very hard to remove that word from common vocabulary.
As a mother of a Down Syndrome young man, I couldn't be more pleased for these 6 young people.
I am disgusted at the use of the "r" word. My nieces and nephews used it all the time in their conversations. I made them that it's offensive to me and their cousin. I was told "we don't think of him that way". I had to explain that he wasn't the only person with a disability, if that was their train of thought!
Irish very lapsed Catholic here. Growing up, all schools in Ireland were run by Catholic orders. One good thing that was drilled into us from a very young age (school starts at 3/4 years) was the phrase DUINE LE DIA ( a person of God) . Because it’s so ingrained into my DNA I had to ask google to translate what the phrase means into English both literally and culturally.
The Irish phrase duine le Dia translates literally to "a person with God" or "a person belonging to God".
Meaning and Tradition:
It has traditionally been used in Irish culture to describe someone who is neurodivergent, has an intellectual or developmental disability (such as Down syndrome), or lives with a mental illness.
Cultural View: Instead of defining a person by their limitations or a medical diagnosis, the phrase reflects a traditional spiritual view that these individuals possess a unique innocence and a close connection to the divine.
Community Protection: Historically, a duine le Dia was seen as being under divine protection. Harming, mocking, or turning such a person away from your door was believed to bring bad luck or a curse upon a household. As a result, they were typically integrated into village life, given food and shelter, and allowed to move safely through the parish.
I'm a former Special Olympics volunteer. His use of the R word is sickening. The kids I worked with were the kindest and most loving people with amazing can do attitudes.
You have to love Pope Leo. He speaks out for the many vulnerable ones and treats them with dignity. We are all made in the image and likeness of God, no matter what we look like in the eyes of men and women. We are all beloved children of God even those who have chosen to mock and insult others. Trump and those who imitate him should learn from Pope Leo and imitate him.
You either value human life, or you do not. Cutting prenatal care through Medicaid and nutrition for moms and their developing babies through WIC does not make you pro-life, in my estimation. Cutting SSI to people who live at home looks like punishment for those who give birth to children with complex medical needs.
In the 1990's I worked for a City and county funded agency that was known at that time as MHMR. I met a woman who was born with Apert's syndrome-- a rare genetic mutation that causes the early fusing of bones before birth. People who have this syndrome have very distinctive facial features as the bones in parts of their skull fuse early and others continue to grow. They are born with hands that look like mittens and toes fused together. Other skeletal bones also develop in unusual ways. Some people have developmental delays, others do not. Some have biologically based mental health issues.
The woman I met had two children; one had Aperts and the other did not. When the child with Aperts was born, her own father told her she should have "drowned him". Whenever someone with Aperts concieves a child, male or female parent, there is a 50% chance the child will inherit their Aperts syndrome. Her younger child was born prematurely at her obstetric doctor's office when she went for her 7 month gestational checkup. That child was genetically "normal". This disabled woman was raising her children independently and living on SSI. This is the sort of family whose SSI and Medicaid benefits are being reduced and who now have to file SNAP paperwork every six months to prove they are still disabled.
I'm a retired special Ed teacher 2 and that word with an R is not used in my vocabulary. They are the most amazing kids to work with. They're smart, they're funny, they're loving.
It is terrible that he would have to describe these children like that. So we just keep loving them. And we keep working with them and the heck with what he says, woody says, is not important never was
