Newsom commuted all 548 death sentences on Thursday, the largest act of clemency in American history. Pope Leo has spent years telling Catholics in public life that this is what pro-life really means.
In the aftermath of the debacle in TN, and in consideration of Hegseth's recent flirtation with public executions, we should all sign on to Mr. Justice Blackmun's 1994 assertion that he would "no longer tinker with the machinery of death." Yet on the very day that Governor Newsome commuted 548 death sentences, the states of Indiana, Florida, and Alabama all carried out executions. In the anti-abortion movement, advocates often – usually – note that the victims of abortion are innocent; but the church’s pro-life teaching is rooted not in innocence but in human dignity. The church teaches that human beings, even those guilty of heinous crimes, do not lose the human dignity conferred on us at conception; we retain it from ‘womb to tomb’ – to natural death. Our pro-life activism must always reflect that belief.
Demand you're a new Congressman and US Senate member, stop the IRAN war after Jan 20, 2027, and stop wasting lives and money. This was a war that Trump started on no basis of any threat to the USA, BiBi talked this idiot to start the war just as BiBi had with Biden and Obama. years before, and finally BiBi found the idiot who would do as BiBi wanted.
Also stop all construction that Trump has started; most is a waste of money.
As Catholics we must always remember that we live under the US Constitution and being a politician who supports abortion rights is not the same thing as being pro abortion as an individual. In the US a woman has the right to make choices for her own body. The Catholic Church may be against abortion but every US citizen is not Catholic and therefore abortion must remain legal and even Catholic politicians must be pro abortion rights. It’s pretty straight forward to me.
Power is in the people; just as we did on Tuesday, Nov. 03, 2026, 124 million true Americans voted to stop the madness of Trump and his MAGA gang and try to restore the USA. Like i have said before, there are more of us than Trump's MAGA.. We are strong.
I was happy that Newsom commuted all death sentences. I agree with him. Having served on several juries though, I've learned some east Texans get very upset when the death sentence was taken off the table. May God have mercy on their souls.
I also do not have a problem with abortions because I believe the soul enters upon the first breath of the babe: therefore there's no soul involved....whereas Catholics believe that the soul enters upon conception (because God can go anywhere I guess.) I personally thought Roe was a good compromise between those that are dead against abortion, and those that have no problems with the medical event. I realize Pope Leo and Catholics believe abortion is murder: so I would tell these folks not to have one. God gave us free choice, let Him be the judge.
Mr Newsom is not a practicing Catholic, he has said that himself. But it does appear that he was influenced by the Church's teachings. Would that he would follow all of them. I expect the CA Supreme Court may reject some of the over 300 cases they must ultimately decide.
I was surprised to hear this, as I don't live in CA: but I'm very happy with Newsom's decision. I also have no problem to have others review them. I wish our federal government required additional review on person's sentences being commuted.
A distraction from his support for Israel, which has killed 300,000 Palestinians.
