It really shows how much the relationship between the Philippines and the Catholic Church has improved. Keep in mind that Spain colonized the Philippines and forced the religion onto the native Filipinos.
Pope Francis's visit to the Philippines came after a couple of major typhoons and it was a moment of true solidarity. The Filipinos called Pope Francis "Lolo Kiko." Lolo is Tagalog for "Grandfather." (Kiko being a nickname for Francis, much like how Chito is a nickname for Antonio.)
Knowing that cardinals from the Philippines were part of making history is a sign that Filipinos have a seat at the table. Tagle's friendship with Pope Leo, however, was one of my favorite things to come from the conclave. The timeline is healing.
I'm so glad Pope Leo has a good friend that shares his candy. Being the Pope is a very heavy life, I imagine. I'm glad Pope Leo has someone so close to him as a friend. I understand that's not the point of this writing, but I imagine a Pope needs friends to trust too.
