The Man in the Red Bandana saved as many as 18 people on 9/11 and was honored with the Medal of Freedom on Tuesday. Pope Leo XIV calls empathy a call from God, and Welles Crowther is what that call looks like when it starts climbing stairs.
I often wonder how I would have conducted myself in a situation like that in which Welles found himself. I doubt very much I'd be that brave and resourceful, but I do think about it.
God bless Mr. Crowther and Fr. Judge, who laid down their lives in service. My condolences to their families. This Episcopalian feels that His Holiness, Pope Leo, is the leader that our world needs at this fractious time.
